Report Links More Diseases, Health Problems with Tobacco Use

Need even more reasons to kick the smoking habit? A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Surgeon General shows even more harmful effects associated with cigarette smoking than previously thought. In addition to liver and colorectal cancer, cigarette smoke is a cause of Type 2 diabetes, age-related muscular degeneration, erectile dysfunction and rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, the report offered evidence of tobacco’s potential harm to every human organ.

Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Surgeon General’s warning about the harmful effects of cigarette smoking, the report shows that smoking has declined from 42 percent in 1964 to 18 percent in 2012.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 2,000 new cases of lung and bronchus cancer will be diagnosed in Nevada in 2014. Our center has treated more than 200 lung cancer patients with CyberKnife® technology.
