Men’s Health Month: Understanding Prostate Cancer
June is Men’s Health Month, and an important time to understand and raise awareness for the main health problems that commonly affect men.
One such health issue is prostate cancer, which develops in a man’s prostate gland. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed diseases in men. In 2015, the American Cancer Society estimates more than 220,000 new diagnoses of prostate cancer in the U.S.
While it’s not clear what exactly causes prostate cancer, doctors do know that prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate become abnormal and begin to grow more rapidly than normal cells.
Although prostate cancer is typically a slow-growing disease, there are some types that can grow aggressively and spread, or metastasize to other areas of the body. Early detection of the disease is important when it comes to fighting and successfully treating prostate cancer.
Treatment options for prostate cancer include active surveillance, surgery, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), brachytherapy and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
Reno CyberKnife treats prostate cancer with SBRT using advanced CyberKnife® technology. CyberKnife SBRT is an important option for patients seeking an effective treatment with minimal disruption to their daily routine.
